Moving Stories

movingstories is a SSHRC funded interdisciplinary, collaborative institutional research partnership leading to the design and application of more richly articulated human movement knowledge within digital technology interaction.

movingstories explores the design of digital tools for movement, meaning and interaction. Human movement is ubiquitous but is also complex – it is simultaneously expressive, communicative, functional and intelligent. movingstories brings together researchers both scientists and artists in computing science, dance, music, theatre, machine learning, cognitive science, psychology, health, game design and virtual reality. movingstories researchers work together to understand movement knowledge, and to integrate research methods from a diverse range of disciplines – highlighting somatic movement expertise, and including arts, design, social science, computer science and engineering. The movingstories Partnership is dedicated to developing a deeper understanding of movement experience and developing tools that investigate, map, integrate and generate expressive qualities. This is timely research for the innovative development of technology for movement interaction.

movingstories research institutional partners include Simon Fraser University (SFU), The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), The Laban Institute of Movement Studies in New York (LIMS), Emily Carr University of Art and Design (ECUAD), The University of British Columbia Theater Department (UBC), Credo Interactive and H+Technologies.
